  1. I believe that Latin America has a strong sense of nationalism. The reason that I believe this is because they want to advance their status. It seems that the countries in Latin America have tried many times to become more powerful, but every time it happens another country steps in to stop this progress. I will use the example of Guatemala. The president of Guatemala was making the country a fair area to live. They split land so all people had equal chances. They were on the right track with a democratic nation that they were seeking. Then once they were succeeding they were stopped by Americans medalling where they were not needed.

  2. In my opinion, not only does Latin America have a strong sense of nationalism, but they also have a strong sense of unity, and uniqueness. They did not appreciate when the United States tried to intervene and change the mold of their society. They are based on ideals other than wealth and profit. It seems as though for a long period of time, Latin America has consistently been infiltrated by outside peoples and forced to either give up their land, or make change. I feel that this has brought the Latin American people together and made them more unified against outsiders. By demonstrating this unification, I believe that they will continue to grow economically and politically.

  3. Based upon the readings, I have determined that Latin America has a resilient sense of nationalism. First of all, nationalism is described as patriotic feelings and independence towards a country. The Latin Americans have a true sense of nationalism because they truly care about their countries. They are always looking to improve the status of the people, and the countries they live in. The United States, along with many others, has constantly gotten in their way of success. The Latin Americans always continue to work together to improve the nation. They have pride in themselves; who they are, what they are about, and their ideology in the way life should be. This determination that Latin America possesses has made them the nationalistic population that they are.

  4. on what I believe Latin America definitely has nationalism as replicated with the United States. Every country has issues of trust with other countries. For example look at what happened with 911. Latin America is a beautiful country that is bittersweet, for the reason because they care about and have dignity about their country and want to advance themselves to be a more independent country, but periodically run into road blocks for example what happened with the United States when they tried to intervene with their society. Also other countries have tried to deter them. But they are a country with a positive outlook with the future of their country and have pride and sense and are always looking to improve their country for the better of their people. They do not let the negative issues from other countries stop them, they just move forward for a better ways of life for all in their country. They issues with other counties have made them a more stronger, more unified country. I believe with their positive attitude they will grow with goods and services, monetarily as well as politically.

  5. Latin America has a strong sense of nationalism. When other countries, such as the United States, tried to come in and take over control the government denied them. They wanted to build themselves as a nation without the help from an outside source. Because of their determination and strong will power, they are a better country for it. They have strong pride and a sense of unity throughout the country. They want the best possible life for their people, but they want to to it on their own. They would rather work hard and struggle than take a hand out from someone else. Latin America is a strong nation and has a great sense of nationalism because of everything they have been through.

  6. Based upon the readings, I believe that Latin America has a strong sense of nationalism. Throughout the years, many countries have tried to penetrate the country, and they stayed strong. The dignity that Latin America has for itself and the citizens of it is impeccable. Latin America is constantly looking to improve the way of life for the citizens, and how in any way they can improve their country and systems.
To go along with nationalism, Latin America is very unified. With many countries being contained in “Latin America”, it has a stronger sense of togetherness than many other single countries. By either advancing the status of Latin America together or helping one another out, Latin America is very strong as a whole.

  7. Latin America has a strong sense of nationalism because they are very well rounded and grounded by not falling to the elite countries from different nations but putting up many fights for there homeland. Latin-American nationalism is following a new path because of the speed of change now made possible by mass communications, new technologies, and contemporary ideologies. The Latin-American republics are poor in nationalistic symbols and are at very different levels of national awareness. Nationalistic ideologies, however, activist and gradualist, are found everywhere, though their social impact varies widely. Certain Latin American countries especially Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, and Costa Rica appear sufficiently advanced socially and economically to be stable nation-states.

  8. Nationalism is apparent in Latin America after reading the assigned material for this week. Overall, Latin America began trying to branch away from its dependency on the U.S. and various other countries. The main reason for this came about because of the Great Depression. Many of the exports that Latin America previously used to generate revenue were no longer being purchased. Therefore, Latin America had to become an industrialized society and relied heavily on itself. Eventually, tariffs were even used in order to protect the new fledged economy. Furthermore, Latin America began showing a sense of nationalism after WWII by including all races and ethnicities in society. Society began embracing the different cultures and lifestyles of the wide range of people in Latin America. One main point that I found to definitely show nationalism and a sense of togetherness in Latin America was the decline in the idea of white supremacy. Basically, Latin America embraced its diverse culture and I feel this helped them to become a much more “unified” society in the betterment of their situations. Latin America being embracive of each other helped to withstand outside influences.

  9. Latin America has a very strong sense of Nationalism. There have been many tries over the years by other powerhouse countries that have tried to take over Latin America and have failed. The people of Latin America stand proud of their country, they have been through many tries and tribulations. The sense of self in this country is above all else. The people of this country are very sociable and always looking forward to better the country. The people of this country appreciate hard work and do so willingly. They would rather work for all that they earn rather than be handed anything.

  10. Nationalism is defined as a strong belief that interests of a particular nation or state are of primary importance. After reading the chapter regarding Nationalism, I believe that this holds true for much of Latin America. Many of the Latin American countries were viewed as inferior to other European countries and the United States. However, this did not prevent Latin American for standing up for their beliefs and trying to better their nations. For instance, the United States intervened in Guatemala during a time of change and potential, but because the United States viewed communism as a potential threat, they believed that they had the right to overthrow the nation. Through the wars and several attacks on Latin American nations, they have consistently attempted to improve governments, economies, and social issues, and they epitomize the idea of Nationalism.

  11. From the readings, I believe that Latin America has a strong sense of nationalism that is quite respectable after all they have been through. Nationalism is the idea of a strong group of people possessing a recognized political identity. Repeatedly, Latin America makes an effort to rise up and become a strong nation backed with a democratic government but they do not receive the support of other countries. The United States in particular puts them down a lot and seems to think that Latin America is beneath them and that intervention is always needed. For instance, in “The Shark and the Sardines,” Arevalo states that the United States needs just accept Latin America for what it is and all of its customs, ideas, culture, and government and stop trying to alter them. Also, Guatemala was improving under Arbenz’s rule. If the United States had not stepped in, things probably would have been better for them. Obviously Latin America possesses a strong sense of nationalism because they would not keep attempting to make their countries known and a part of global dealings. Overall, I believe Latin America’s nationalism would be much stronger if they were left to do things on their own without constant intervention.

  12. Latin American nationalism is an ideology that was formed during the Great Depression as a backlash to neocolonialism and imperialism. With the global economy depressed, foreign enterprises within Latin America could no longer export, because other countries no longer had the money to import Latin American products. Out of necessity, more than anything else, Latin American industrialists began to develop their own countries from within, building infrastructure, establishing oil refineries, and growing their own steel industry. The economic shift from agricultural exports to import substitution industrialization was followed by a power shift; land barons lost their importance, and therefore lost their political power. This power was transferred to the middle class voters and working class, who formed the backbone of the new economy. Lands that had been previously held by foreign companies were nationalized in order to benefit Latin America, instead of allowing its exploitation. Latin America’s self reliance and nationalism resulted in a wave of patriotism and pride that allowed Latin Americans to reject the ideas of scientific racism and embrace their own culture.

I think that nationalism, as an ideology for any country, is a good idea, although it can also be a limiting idea. Nationalism usually becomes isolationist in its efforts and it seems to carry with it a double standard, whereby large, powerful countries, such as the U.S. are criticized for being nationalist, while smaller, weaker countries are applauded for being nationalist. I totally support Latin American nationalism as it was demonstrated by Lazaro Cardenas in Mexico. He is a president whose policies I would have supported.

As far as the readings in MLAH, I found the excerpt from “Wide and Alien is the World” to be naïve and over simplified in its overly romanticized portrayal of the harvest in Rumi. I also found it making an unfair comparison, because even though Benito was getting paid for his work on the hacienda and was there of his own free will, he thought that his situation was no better than the workers in 1885 who were forced to work without pay as slaves.

In summary, because I believe that countries should be sovereign and that they should be allowed to look after their own best interests, I support nationalism. However, I also recognize that foreign enterprise can sometimes boost local economies and alleviate the suffering of many individuals who live in sub-industrialized countries.

  13. I found nationalism to be the attitude that the members of a nation have when they care about their national identity, and the actions that the members of a nation take when seeking to achieve (or sustain) self-determination. I feel Latin Americans are somewhat on the fence about nationalism. There is no doubt that they take pride in where they are from and cherish their heritage. Take the Incas for example, they could have simply surrendered their land and kept their lives but they wouldn’t give their land up and paid the ultimate price. What makes me uncertain about Latin American nationalism though is that I feel they know their place and where they stand, however wrong that may sound. In MLAH it says, “Latin America perfected its role.” It also says, “It continues to exist at the service of others' needs…” This leads me to believe that they are fine with their role now and advancing and gaining power isn’t a main priority.

    1. That is an interesting insight. Keep in mind that Latin America's power to change its role is quite limited given the power balance that has developed since WW II. That said, keep in mind that "knowing your place" is not always subservience. Given Latin America's combination of resources to population, keeping quiet may be its greatest strength.

  14. It was around 1930 that the term Nationalism became apparent in Latin America. It followed what we have previously studied in neocolonialism. In my opinion Nationalism is an upgrade in that respect. It brought a lot of good things to Latin America; the new nationalists refused to conform to the scientific racism norm. Nationalists saw past that, and because of that, the big problem of feeling inferior and white supremacy started to fade away, although as the book states, the idea will never completely disappear. Nationalists pointed out neocolonial flaws during WWII such as not being able to do much import or export. They didn't have the money to import the goods they needed BECAUSE the raw materials they normally export were just piling up on the docks; everybody was too 'busy'. Then when the US planned to jump back into business with Latin America, they had changed their economy, to this nationalist approach. My last opinion is perhaps it was a jerk reaction to the prior system failing because of the war, and I think a mixed economy would be a little better. Because part of the nationalist ideology (at least for Latin America) was that they were very skeptical about foreign investment. I think to an extent you need foreign investment to boost the economy and have all the goods you need.

  15. Latin American nationalists took a skeptical view of foreign investment and enterprise. They did not want to take as much of a part because they thought that it would just ruin the development of the region’s potential. They also refused to accept any type of the scientific racism. Oil and steelwork were the pride of nationalists and the landowning class had lost power to an urban coalition of the middle and working class. They wanted to industrialize. The nationalist were bringing the blacks to become the new models. They thought of race mixing and emphasized social and cultural combining over the lighter skin color. Scientific racism and white supremacy was being thrown to the trash. Personally, I agree with most of these thoughts. I think that there should have been no white supremacy or any racism at all. I think that it is a good idea that African Americans are being used as models and that they are showing cultural and social mixing. To me, the Latin American nationalists had good ideas and concepts that should have been followed and that it was also a step forward in the right direction. They are coming together as one and are bringing unity among the people. They are doing what they think is right and what they think will help their country in the long wrong; they are not just worried about themselves but as a country as a whole. By doing so, this is actually keeping their country together.

    1. I agree with your position. Please read my comment to Rebecca Robinson's post. The challenges today require a whole new economic model which, hopefully, will have put aside the racialist component of past models.

  16. Latin American Nationalism denounced the previously held notion by elitists that scientific racism was correct and the only way to progress was through a whitening process that often lead to the subjugation and assassination of indigenous people. Addressing the unremitting inferiority-complex statesmen could overcome old dilemmas and strive toward a productive, functioning, independent society they so desired. Nationalism called for self-reliance and sustainability, eliminating the dependence on imports and foreign goods. This is not a necessarily a selfish ideology, but it is somewhat of a naïve one. To be completely self-reliant at a time when globalization was becoming increasingly prevalent may only cause a disservice to a country and subsequently its citizens. By limiting trade, one limits economic opportunities and even diplomacy with other countries. Labor unions would greatly support a nationalist economy, for job security and collective bargaining would be ensured. However I think a balance is needed between national production and global trading. To be an isolationist is economic policy is very limiting for a country, especially at a time when technology was advancing so rapidly. I believe the ideal of nationalism is a noble one that strives to create prosperity for the people, but in execution it does not fair well.

    1. Yours is a very reasoned judgement. The situation is quite an enigma. The balance of economic advantage always falls to the more industrialized trading partner which consistently leads to a dependent economic position for the primary product producer. In Latin America, the nation that seems to have risen above this dilemma the most is Brazil, but that only through massive ISI industrialization through the 1980s. Simultaneously, as global warming, resource depletion and population growth continue, a new model altogether is called for. Indeed enigmatic.

  17. In my opinion I think that Latin America does have a strong sense of nationalism because they stick together and they are strong and determined. Over the years they have been tested by other countries including ours and they still found a way to over come their hardships. The people in Latin america seem to be very intelligent and sensible which helps them hold their own as a country. Overall I think that with the strength that Latin america possesses they can continue to make strides in the world as being not only a beautiful country but also one with a strong government.

  18. Nationalism in Latin America is strong. The people believe in fighting for what they want. The people work hard to provide for the family. The country seems to band together to make a point like when the people banned together to declare Mexico's independence on March 23, 193 due to a strike of the oil field workers. Mexico is not afraid to work to stand on its own and the people will work together to provide the support the country needs. " The Wealth of Mexico Must Be Possessed by Mexico" (pp 175) best sums up nationalism in Latin America.

  19. Nationalism in Latin America is quite potent. The only thing stronger than their nationalism is their unity. These people and their government stick together. Even when first world countries such as ourselves try to step in and halt the process of their success. These countries want to rival the First world countries of the world but the first world countries don’t want that to happen. Latin America is will to do what it takes though to make it up through the ranks and be a major competitor in the world. They are not willing to be bullied or pushed around by the more powerful countries. Hopefully they can find a way to deal with the economic problems that face the world nowadays.

  20. Nationalism in Latin America really shows if you see how the people come together. They are strong, hard working, family oriented, and most importantly their culture keeps them going. They always have positive attitudes towards everything. They do not let other countries over power them. They believe in fighting for what they believe. Even when this harsh world looks down upon them, they smile back and push on.
