When I think of Latin America, I picture full streets full of women wearing bright colorful dresses, and skinny men with tight black pants and a bright shirt.
ReplyDeleteI believe I got this thought through television and pictures on the internet and movies. Anytime you see Latin America in a movie it is super crowded, and everyone is dressed so brightly colored dancing in the streets. I am sure that this is not true at all, but this is how Latin America is portrayed!
When I think of Latin Americans I think of cheap labor (Thought).
ReplyDeleteThis thought came from tv shows such as George Lopez because they are factory workers and are always looked down upon.
Hola! When I think of Latin America I think of bright colors, mariachi bands playing music on their guitars, trumpets and violins.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts come from visiting Epcot at Disney, a trip to San Antonio Texas, and some videos we watched in Spanish class. Adios!
I almost forgot about Epcot! That was actually probably the first experience I had with Latin American culture because I went when I was younger!
DeleteI agree...I think of bands playing latin music and big parties with lots of food and drink. Oh...and the movie The Three Amegos. Thats a great movie!
DeleteWhen I think of Latin America I think gorgeous Latino women with attitude and men with accents. I think I get this stereotype from television shows and movies. Latin America makes me think of poor little villages and beautiful landscapes with lots of color and ocean. These images also come from things I see on television.
ReplyDeleteTara,
DeleteWhen I think of Latin America I too think of beautiful women. I never thought of them as having an attitude, but after I thought about the experiences I've had with Latino Women (movies, news, etc.) I would definitely agree. The women in many of the movies I have seen seem to stand up for themselves and live a "rough and tough" lifestyle/demeanor. Do you think of women as having accents as well like men? Or do you perceive women as having a better grasp on the English language?
When thinking about Latin Americans, my first thought would be seeing groups of men doing outside work, such as cutting grass, for a low price. I think that I get this thought or stereotype because it is all that we see. It is displayed on television shows, movies, and even in the real world. When going through certain areas, if people are doing outside labor like cutting grass or building and fixing homes, we usually are seeing a group of Latin American men doing this work for a small price.
ReplyDeleteThought- Latin Americans are sexy!
ReplyDeleteThought Source- From watching TV shows and magazines showcasing the lifestyle of certain latin american countries.
Charles,
DeleteI have to agree with you that many Latin Americans are sexy. I think that there are a number of very gorgeous women in this region of the world. Being from Arizona I have seen a lot of men and women from Latin America and I have to say that there are a lot more cute Latin American women than there are ugly ones. The ones that I see in person are definitely different than the ones we see on TV and in the heart of Latin America. I wish that I could go and experience another culture like that of the Latin Americas. That would be an awesome experience.
Thought- latin Americans Women are beautiful and the atmosphere of Latin America is always fun and positive.
ReplyDeleteThought source- I have this image of Latin America from watching television. Although I know that Television always shows the glorified side of Latin America.
thought-- Tacos, Tortillas, salsa, burritos, churros, quesadillas, guacamole, !!!!
ReplyDeleteThought source-- Chipotle Mexican Grill
Thought-I think of Latin Americans as belonging to two different classes of individuals. In Latin America, you are either rich or you are poor, there is no in between. Also, I picture the individuals with very bright, colorful expressions, especially their clothing, dancing, and celebrations.
ReplyDeleteThought Source-My trip to Mexico and various other media sources such as television and music.
Erika,
DeleteI agree with your statement completely, there is definitely a class issue in most Latin American countries. Your opinion grabbed my attention because usually another thing that pops into your head about Latin American countries for me is specifically the country of Mexico. I have always envisioned this country with the drug cartels but severe poor sections of major cities where streets are dirty. However, the current richest man in the world has a dwelling in Mexico so there is definitely money lingering, it’s just not the lifestyle of the mass of people in these countries. And I always think of the colors of clothing that they have also, I think it is some of the most celebratory colors you can wear.
Thought- When I think of Latin Americans, I think of a very expressive group of people that talk very fast. They are not shy and love to sing, dance, and wear loud, colorful clothes.
ReplyDeleteThought Source-My thought is based off of my own experiences in Latin America during various trips. Also, this is evident in various television shows such as "I Love Lucy" and "Modern Family."
Thought- when I think of Latin America I think of cheep labor, good food, and a very different sense of fashion dance and work ethic. Bright colors and loud music, along with a lot of dancing. along with this I also think of laziness.
ReplyDeleteThought source- multiple trips to Mexico, driving through Mexico at 2pm and seeing every construction working taking a siesta. various forms of entertainment including television and radio
Thought: When I think of Latin America, my first thought is of Socialism and weak government. I think of an abundance of natural resources, but poverty. Latin America, to me, is a place of colonization and exploited, cheap labor. The people seem oppressed and disbanded. Latin America has a very strong cultural connotation including music, art, cuisine, celebration, language, and religion.
ReplyDeleteThought source:Mostly this imagery comes from the media, or television shows. Some from history, and knowing a little about the United State's relationship with Latin America.
Thought- I think that Latin Americans are fairly small but are very loud and animated people with big personalities.
ReplyDeleteThought Source- I have this opinion because of my own experiences with Latin Americans in America and from what I have seen on television shows and in movies.
Thought - When I think about Latin America and Latin Americans I think about all of the drugs that come from there. My view of a lot of Latin Americans is that they are dirty.
ReplyDeleteThought Source - I am from Arizona and there are so many Latin Americans that live there. Also from watching TV there are shows and documentaries that portray this.
Thought- I have many opinions on the Latin American culture, but the one that sticks out the most is about the religion in this part of the world. I always thought of the Latin American culture as that of mostly Roman Catholics where most culture is centered on this one religion. I have always respected their devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God.
ReplyDeleteThought Source- Every time I have seen a picture of a place in Latin America, I usually see a Catholic church not far from any place of residence. I have learned about this culture also from being in the Catholic faith myself. I always learned that in the past that the Latin American culture was very devout to this religion.
When I think of Latin Americans, I think of poor people that work hard for little amounts of money. I think of people that engage in illegal acts. I also think of very good baseball players.
ReplyDeleteThought source- In the Southern and Western
United States, you often see Latin Americans working odd jobs that require manual labor. You also see them working jobs that others don't want to. Also the MLB is loaded with Latin American players and have been for a long time.
Thought: When I think of Latin America, I think of men and women on the street in bright colored clothing. I also think of many festivals in Latin America that are celebrated by food and dancing in the streets.
ReplyDeleteThought Source- Various media sources such as movies and magazines.
Thought - When thinking of Latin America, I often think of smuggling drugs and gang violence. I also think of much brighter things, namely dancing, music, family, and food. I also think of a poor economy and struggling families that often take drastic measures to survive.
ReplyDeleteThought source - I think my viewpoints on Latin America stem from many social medias, namely movies, the internet, and the news. Many of the media standpoints that I have come across portray Latin America and Latinos in a negative manner. Furthermore, most of the movies that I have watched dealing with Latin America always seem to have some connection to drugs and violence.
Josh,
DeleteI too think of poor economies when I think of Latin America, so I found your post interesting. I have the perception that this is due to failing political policies. Socialist governments and money spent too much of military investments and weapons rather than programs to attempt to better the life of the people. This idea may be misconstrued, but this is how the news often portrays those countries. As for the drugs and illegal acts, the cocaine cartel of the eighties adds to the perception that these countries often partake in illegal acts. This connotation is common of people to think, though I find it is often incorrect.
Thought- When I think of Latin America, I generally think of poverty and crime. I know that the economy isn't great in many of these countries and that they struggle with crime.
ReplyDeleteThought Source- I have these notions because of images I have seen mostly, and articles I've read. South America, and especially Mexico seem to be very poor countries, and I know not many children get educated. Also, I know some countries deal with terrorism, such as Colombia (FARC) and many others.
When I think of Latin America my thoughts turn to food. (I love food) There is also the drug problem that comes to mind. It seems anytime you hear of drug smuggling into the US it comes from south of the US boader. Along with that comes the violence and I cant help but to think of all the "illegals" that come across the boader to take advantage of the US economy.
ReplyDeleteI think of cheap labor, and a lower socio-economic status. Hard workers. ( I'm so happy I figured this portion of the assignment out! Im just learning the computer)!

ReplyDeleteWhen I think Of Latin America I think of the times I've been to Mexico. Especially when I went with my school in 2009. For a few days we stayed in a little old town called Merida. It was so colorful and full of old buildings. Every night around sundown there was street vendors everywhere! I know Latin America is associated with bad things but thats just what comes to mind when I think of it.
ReplyDeleteThought source- from my own experience
(I have had many difficulties posting my assignments that why this is so late)
I think of hard workers but for cheap labor. It turns to the dirty water that they drink and ruins peoples health. I do not really mind them because I am from way up north in Canada!
